Price of apple tablet $1000……. Overpriced?
Apple tablet in the $1000 range? For us tech enthusiast we hope not. Apple is on track to release the much anticipated apple tablet early in 2010. analyst for Oppenheimer; Yair Reiner wrote in a research note Wednesday that checks with computer supply-chain manufacturers suggest that Apple “will begin ramping production in earnest in February, implying that the tablet could launch in late March or April,” as long as there aren’t any delays in the production process. Reiner says the apple tablet could be similar in size to the net-books. To increase demand for the apple tablet, apple hold discussing, with book publishers, to distribute their titles on a new e-book platform. The apple tablet device would likely have more functions than simply reading.
Oppenheimer’s Reiner said the company has been “actively reaching out to book publishers with a very attractive proposal for distributing their books on a forthcoming e-book platform,” which he presumes would be the tablet. Apple will likely split revenue on a 30 percent to 70 percent basis between the company and publishers, according to the analyst, and not request exclusivity on titles carried through any possible e-book store.
Reiner’s prophecy calls for a tablet with a 10.1-inch LCD display and an average sale price of $1,000. If Reiner’s prediction is accurate, the Apple device seems wildly overpriced for the consumer market. With smartphones hovering in the $200 range (with a two-year wireless plan), e-readers such as the Amazon Kindle and Sony Reader priced at $259, netbooks under $400, full-size laptops near $600, and MacBooks starting at a grand, a $1000 Apple tablet would seem an exotic luxury built for the privileged few. It would certainly draw crowds at the Apple Store, but few shoppers would buy one.
The apple tablet, if the rumors are true, will be a combo e-reader, media player, and Web browser. It will fill the void between smartphones, Kindle-class readers, and netbooks/laptops. And given Apple’s legendary penchant for innovation, the tablet will likely surprise us with some clever tricks all its own. Apple has been a leader in selling over priced item such as the iphone for $600. As PC World’s Tim Moynihan pointed out a high initial cost may very well be part of Apple’s grand plan.
The steep introductory price is designed “to squeeze every ounce of profit margin from early adopters, who want to get the latest and greatest. It is predicted the price will fall soon after the initial release.
