Apple to be Player in Mobile Games?

Since Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch appeared, industry-watchers have speculated about the death of handheld gaming consoles. Recently published was an analyst’s prediction that by 2014, Apple’s devices would be the main source of growth in mobile games.

Currently Nintendo is dominating the mobile game industry. Nintendo has sold 3.31 million units of the DS device; this is the second highest monthly total ever for a video game platform. Handheld gaming devices were in the spotlight when it comes to the video game industry. Sales were up 7% from 2008, and the nintento DS had a 17% market share.
Making a direct comparison between apple and Nintendo is very difficult. The gaming industry usually doesn’t look at smart phone for gamming stats. However in the terms of revenue, smartphone games are still a fraction compared to other handheld devices like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.
In the end, it may make more sense to look at the succes of iPod Touch games as the expansion of a new, distinct market, rather than encroachment into Nintendo’s (and Sony’s) existing market.
Smartphones have certainly done some harm to handheld sales growth, and it seems likely that some day they will pose a serious threat. But for now, the evidence suggests that the games available on these platforms simply aren’t good enough to stop many consumers from buying the DS.

Apps: new / upcoming apps

What is new in the world of apps? Apple reports that iphone and ipod touch users have downloaded over 3 billions apps since the app store launched 18 months ago. 3 billions is well over the bench mark apple CEO steve jobs ever imagined. Apple’s iPhone has more than 100,000 applications.

There are over two million developers using Adobe Flash, and soon they will be able to convert their applications into iPhone apps automatically. Adobe is adding “Packager for iPhone” to its Flash developer tools. Included in Flash Professional CS5 (Creative Suite 5), the software is currently in private beta testing. The iPhone does not support Flash; however ActionScript 3 projects will run as native iPhone apps after conversion. Several iPhone apps that have been developed using ActionScript 3 are currently available on the Apple App Store. New code can be written or existing web content can be repackaged as an iPhone app.

iWebTrack Holdings Inc., has recently launched a mobile web tracking application of their web analytics tool iWebTrack, www.iwebtrack.com, designed specifically for the iPhone and iPod Touch. iWebTrack customers can now get real-time statistics on the fly with the new iPhone mobile application. iWebTrack’s new mobile web tracking application allows customers to access crucial information including page views, unique visitors, hourly statistics, conversions, and much more directly from their iPhone. In addition to the iPhone mobile application, iWebTrack also offers mobile web tracking applications for Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices thus continuing to give competitors such as Indextools, Clicktracks, and WebTrends a run for their money.

The MobileMe Gallery app (iTunes link) lets users select an album with a tap and flick back and forth through photos, pinch to zoom, or rotate into landscape view. The software also automatically stores photos that have been viewed, so they can be accessed again even without a network connection. Friends’ publicly shared content can also be accessed by choosing their name from contacts or entering their MobileMe member name. It also includes a scrolling sampler at the top that gives users access to recent photos.

Security Cam, this is an iPhone app which had to wait for over a year to be approved and available in Appstore, the name is Security Cam, the approval delay is understandable since the idea of the app could be troubling to some people. With Security Cam, you can spy on people by taking their pictures without their notice, the app is for security purpose but at the same time can also raise privacy issue, and certainly not all people want to be monitored secretly while doing non-public activity.

Security Cam Applications gives two spying modes:

1. Frequency capture, with this mode you are able to set a specific frequency on how often you want the app takes a photo

2. Audio Trigger, this mode takes the photo when the audio level is reached – or pre-defined level of sound is detected

You are also able to select the two modes at the same time, taking the picture on a time interval and audio is detected, but of course that could effect to iPhone battery, therefore you can set iPhone to go into sleep mode until a specific time.

Appmakr Is a Big Hit

A new service launched last week called appmakr. Appmakr allows anyone to make an iphone application. The service officially launched last week and since then the service has built 1,858 iphone apps in just six days. Appmakr so far is a big hit, with thousands of registered users, partially due to the $99 discount they are offering through January 31, 2010.

AppMakr was created by PointAbout, Inc. and Publicity is not in short supply for appmakr. Appmakr has been featured in many top blogs around the world. Robert Scoble has named pointabout as one of the top 25 startups to watch in 2010. Robert states “the iPhone is getting more and more important and having an app is a way for companies to keep relationships with customers up to date. Appmakr lets you make your own iPhone app from a number of different feeds like RSS, Twitter, or YouTube, among others… without writing any code.”

Appmakr offers a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) interface, for the first time. Creating a fully functional app has never been easier. Users can create a sample iphone app in under 30 seconds. Users simply need to enter a website or keywords and appmakr will create an iphone app built from that content. Once users have created there app user can then customize the iphone application by:

  1. Adding content feeds, including Twitter, RSS, iTunes podcast, Flickr, YouTube, Blogger, mp4, and others.
  2. Changing the app’s branding, including the icon, splash screen, tab icons, header image, and text colors.
  3. Monetizing the app by charging for it on iTunes, or by adding ads from AdMob, Medialets, DoubleClick and Google AdSense.

Publishing the app to the iTunes App Store is as easy as choosing between two options:

1. The Easy Way: AppMakr publishes your app for $199

2. You’re In Control: Publish under your own brand for $499.

App Downloads Hit 3 Billion.

Apple reports that iphone and ipod touch users have downloaded over 3 billions apps since the app store launched 18 months ago. 3 billions is well over the bench mark apple CEO steve jobs ever imagined. Apple doesn’t provide a breakdown of paid vs. free apps or any category breakdowns. Apple has credited a lot of its success for the apps on the popularity of consumers submitting apps to apple. After the apps are submitted to apple they are then but through a screening process and then put in the app store, where apple shares profits with the developers of the apps.

Analyst Charles Golvin, meanwhile, says that smartphone penetration in the U.S. reached 17% in 2009, up from 11%. That’s on par with the 2008 pace, he says. Golvin finds this impressive since technologies that are supporting these types of downloads are still in there initial phases of adoption. Usually this type of growth is stunted as the base expands. Golvin: “Yes, despite Apple getting all the attention, even in a market segment that grew by more than half, RIM maintained its two-to-one advantage over the iPhone. Certainly broad availability across all operators and a range of form factors and prices helps, but also some people just want a keyboard, full stop,” he says.

In the face of new competitors like Google’s Nexus One, Apple’s iPhone still has the advantage with more than 100,000 applications and 3 billion downloads from its App Store. It has been said that apple should be able to benefit from the partial buffer of its app store. Apps help to define the user experience, as customers now expect to use their smartphones for voice, e-mail, games, Internet, music and more. As the market leader in terms of apps, Apple has a distinct advantage in offering the software users have come to expect on their phone.
