Apple to Release Aperture 3

Could the event Apple has planned for the 27th, have a few items to be announced? Photographers have been waiting far too long for a new version of Apple’s Aperture. The last aperture to be released by apple was on February 12, 2008 and was last updated to version 2.1.4 on August 27, 2009. Since then photographers have been hopping to see a new aperture released.

According to a post on Dutch website One More Thing, the wait might be over soon. Several Dutch photography sites are listing a book about Aperture 3 with mid-February availability dates. Aperture 3, by author Johan Elzenga, is a Dutch-language book and is listed for availability on February 15th.

A quick search of Amazon.com and other U.S. booksellers showed no similar texts in the works for the near future, but the Dutch discovery may mean that the long wait for a new release of Aperture is nearing its end.

Apple to be Player in Mobile Games?

Since Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch appeared, industry-watchers have speculated about the death of handheld gaming consoles. Recently published was an analyst’s prediction that by 2014, Apple’s devices would be the main source of growth in mobile games.

Currently Nintendo is dominating the mobile game industry. Nintendo has sold 3.31 million units of the DS device; this is the second highest monthly total ever for a video game platform. Handheld gaming devices were in the spotlight when it comes to the video game industry. Sales were up 7% from 2008, and the nintento DS had a 17% market share.
Making a direct comparison between apple and Nintendo is very difficult. The gaming industry usually doesn’t look at smart phone for gamming stats. However in the terms of revenue, smartphone games are still a fraction compared to other handheld devices like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.
In the end, it may make more sense to look at the succes of iPod Touch games as the expansion of a new, distinct market, rather than encroachment into Nintendo’s (and Sony’s) existing market.
Smartphones have certainly done some harm to handheld sales growth, and it seems likely that some day they will pose a serious threat. But for now, the evidence suggests that the games available on these platforms simply aren’t good enough to stop many consumers from buying the DS.

Apple Uses Controlled Leaks

Last week a former senior marketing manager at apple posted an article “confirming” that the company does indeed purposely leak information in order to boost the buzz surrounding an upcoming product. The ex-apple in question John Martellaro, wrote the process that take place when apple leaks information about up coming products. In the article that ran in the wall street journal, claimed the apple tablet existed and would be announced in January and would be released in March. The article also describes the process of how apple uses controlled leaks. By using controlled leaks apples is able to release information that about a product without hurting its reputation, of never discussing pre-release products. On multiple occasions, Martellaro was told to leak information to the public.
In order for a leak to be successful, the company has to ensure there is a factor of deniability on all sides. Often times the information leak isn’t final. On many occasion the product will change before production actually occurs. If there is now way the information can be linked back to apple, both apple and the news outlets are protected against claims of having disseminated false information. Official leaks are published after the close of the stock market to avoid accusations of stock manipulation.
There are many reasons for apple or any other company to leak information about an upcoming product. In apple’s case they could have leak information about the price of $1,000 to test the waters and the reaction from possible consumers. Apple may want panic / confuse a potential competitor about whom apple had some knowledge.
The information is always leaked by phone or in person, never in emails. If there is any dispute about the information there wouldn’t be any paper trail to contradict and of the parties version of the story. A lot of times two representatives at the same outlet are contacted so it would be easier to point the finger at one another and follow up with a retraction.
Suspicions are one thing, but confirmation is another entirely. This look inside the extremely successful Apple information control mechanism is very helpful when it comes to sorting fact from fiction in the rumor mill.

The iPhone 4G during the 2010 WWDC?

Could we possibly see the iPhone 4G during the 2010 WWDC? According to the Moscone Center calendar (thanks to AppleInsider), there is a vague “corporate event” scheduled for June 28 to July 2, 2010 at Moscone west—a naming strategy that Apple has used in the past to mask its plans ahead of time. Apple has released a new iPhone every summer for the past 3 years running. If the rumors are true and Apple is in production of a 4G iPhone, we can expect to see it During the WWDC. Many Apple-watchers expect the next generation of the iPhone to be CDMA compatible for use with Verizon, though this is unconfirmed.
