Appmakr Is a Big Hit

A new service launched last week called appmakr. Appmakr allows anyone to make an iphone application. The service officially launched last week and since then the service has built 1,858 iphone apps in just six days. Appmakr so far is a big hit, with thousands of registered users, partially due to the $99 discount they are offering through January 31, 2010.

AppMakr was created by PointAbout, Inc. and Publicity is not in short supply for appmakr. Appmakr has been featured in many top blogs around the world. Robert Scoble has named pointabout as one of the top 25 startups to watch in 2010. Robert states “the iPhone is getting more and more important and having an app is a way for companies to keep relationships with customers up to date. Appmakr lets you make your own iPhone app from a number of different feeds like RSS, Twitter, or YouTube, among others… without writing any code.”

Appmakr offers a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) interface, for the first time. Creating a fully functional app has never been easier. Users can create a sample iphone app in under 30 seconds. Users simply need to enter a website or keywords and appmakr will create an iphone app built from that content. Once users have created there app user can then customize the iphone application by:

  1. Adding content feeds, including Twitter, RSS, iTunes podcast, Flickr, YouTube, Blogger, mp4, and others.
  2. Changing the app’s branding, including the icon, splash screen, tab icons, header image, and text colors.
  3. Monetizing the app by charging for it on iTunes, or by adding ads from AdMob, Medialets, DoubleClick and Google AdSense.

Publishing the app to the iTunes App Store is as easy as choosing between two options:

1. The Easy Way: AppMakr publishes your app for $199

2. You’re In Control: Publish under your own brand for $499.

Apple’s commanding lead in the mobile software space has led to a blistering pace of downloads from its App Store. Tuesday, Apple announced that its App Store downloads topped 3 billion. It was just 99 days before that when Apple announced the 2 billion threshold had been crossed. Over that span, applications were downloaded at a rate of more than 10.1 million per day. With a service like appmakr these numbers are sure to sky rocket. Its safe to say mobile technology has changed will never look back.

App Downloads Hit 3 Billion.

Apple reports that iphone and ipod touch users have downloaded over 3 billions apps since the app store launched 18 months ago. 3 billions is well over the bench mark apple CEO steve jobs ever imagined. Apple doesn’t provide a breakdown of paid vs. free apps or any category breakdowns. Apple has credited a lot of its success for the apps on the popularity of consumers submitting apps to apple. After the apps are submitted to apple they are then but through a screening process and then put in the app store, where apple shares profits with the developers of the apps.

Analyst Charles Golvin, meanwhile, says that smartphone penetration in the U.S. reached 17% in 2009, up from 11%. That’s on par with the 2008 pace, he says. Golvin finds this impressive since technologies that are supporting these types of downloads are still in there initial phases of adoption. Usually this type of growth is stunted as the base expands. Golvin: “Yes, despite Apple getting all the attention, even in a market segment that grew by more than half, RIM maintained its two-to-one advantage over the iPhone. Certainly broad availability across all operators and a range of form factors and prices helps, but also some people just want a keyboard, full stop,” he says.

In the face of new competitors like Google’s Nexus One, Apple’s iPhone still has the advantage with more than 100,000 applications and 3 billion downloads from its App Store. It has been said that apple should be able to benefit from the partial buffer of its app store. Apps help to define the user experience, as customers now expect to use their smartphones for voice, e-mail, games, Internet, music and more. As the market leader in terms of apps, Apple has a distinct advantage in offering the software users have come to expect on their phone.

Mophie, a popular retailer of Apple iPhone and iPod accessories, is set debut to  their iPhone credit card reader — said to be named “Credit Card reader” — and complimentary processing application. This will allow merchants to accept credit card payments by swiping the card through a special iPhone case. While details around the device add-on are slim, interest is already high.
